EDDIE TRUNK - TRUNK BLOG
(from www.eddietrunk.com)
Spent last Sunday in Los Angeles shooting an interview with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley for VH1 Classic that will air as a one hour special staring in mid October. I'll get you all the specifics when announced in the TV section. The interview was taped at the old A&M records lot, a very cool studio/building now run by Jim Henson. The entire interview is all based around the upcoming KISSology DVD which comes out on Halloween. I am lucky enough to have an advance of this amazing set and trust me you will be blown away. Some of the stuff has been around as bootlegs, but this is by far the best sound and picture quality. I spoke with Gene and Paul about most of the stuff on the DVDs, it was amazing how clearly they remembered events that took place 30 years ago or longer. Some great stories and insights from them about this amazing DVD set. Again, all the air info when I get it. By the way, the DVD is called KISSology Vol. 1 for a reason! There are more volumes coming next year documenting other moments in the band history.

Off camera Paul told me about his upcoming solo tour and album. The backing band will be the group from Rock Star (the house band) and he plans on doing some really cool, obscure Kiss tunes, some never done live. I don't want to blow any secrets but needless to say I put my requests in ("A Million To One" anybody?). Gene filled me in during a lunch break on his many projects and business ventures both Kiss and non-Kiss related. It was a great day and the guys seemed to be in great spirits. My only regret is that we didn't have more time as I had so much stuff I was hoping to get into. We also shot some exclusive interview footage with the guys that will be used for promo use and also shown in movie theaters. There will be a screening of a condensed cut of this DVD in theaters, which should be awesome, that will include some set ups from the guys.

I'll have much more news and DVD giveaways and promotions once we get closer to release.

PAUL STANLEY - LIVE TO WIN REVIEW
(from Unratedmagazine.com)
By Melanie (Sass) Falina

It might seem a pretty daunting task to release your first solo album after more than 25 years, not to mention only your second solo record ever. But if there's anyone out there who knows how to write and put together a good album it's Paul Stanley – frontman extraordinaire and half the brain of Kiss, the mega-famous group who's sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

The aptly titled long-awaited release, Live To Win, was woven by Stanley as a labor of love. Without the need to rush through the creative or recording process, Stanley put this album together the way one would expect of this sapient artist. Though self-produced, Stanley collaborated some of the song writing with Desmond Child – known as ‘Midas' in the music industry for his ability to make songs he's contributed to turn to gold, and also Marti Frederiksen, Andreas Carlsson, and John 5. A collective bank of talent that has backed up hits by artists such as Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Ricky Martin, Marilyn Manson, and Britney Spears. Former Kiss guitarist, Bruce Kulick, makes an appearance on the album as well.

The first song is also the title cut, "Live To Win," a quintessential rock anthem. It's hooky with powerful rock guitars and a hard-hitting force. Stanley is Rocky Balboa, Stanley is the hero that's just pulled a child from a burning building, Stanley is the stellar performer who proves that he has nothing to prove.

"Lift" has got a hypnotic grove with crisp vocals and soaring sentiment.

"Wake Up Screaming" is poetic with a funky under-melody, and utterly catchy – you'll be singing along without even consciously trying.

"Every Time I See Your Around" is the type of love song only Stanley can write. Slightly reminiscent of the Kiss song "Forever," "Every Time I See You Around" showcases the weight of unresolved feelings, having moved on but still holding on – and the beauty and tragedy of it all.

"Bulletproof" is a tough tune, excellently produced with a ballsy guitar solo - written the way a solid rock song should be.

"All About You" is a sexy, heavy-hitter, and "Second To None" is an unabashed ballad with tender vocals.

Timeless rocker, "It's Not Me" is quite simply solid and quality rock which refuses to cow to current trends.

"Lovin' You Without You Now" is a heartfelt declaration of affection.

And the album wraps up with "Where Angels Dare," much like "Live To Win" in the sense it's another proclamation of strength and of taking life by the horns.

As deep and diverse as its creator, Live To Win acts as a window into Stanley 's life and heart and soul. Like the man, this record is a shade of Kiss but it's mainly a reflection of the multifaceted world outside of Kiss. And so completely worth the wait.

PAUL STANLEY SOLO BAND LINE-UP
(from Kissonline)
PaulStanleySoloBand2006.jpg (29954 Byte)Paul Stanley's backing band for the LIVE TO WIN Tour will be the House Band from the CBS TV Show, ROCK STAR. The band appeared on the first season of the show - ROCK STAR: INXS, as well as this year's ROCK STAR: Supernova. Comprised of Paul Mirkovich (Keyboards), Jim McGorman (Guitar), Rafael Moreira (Lead Guitar), Nate Morton (Drums) and Sasha Krivstov (Bass), the House Band is an eclectic, skilled group of professionals who know rock and roll.

Earlier today Paul enthusiastically spoke about bringing the House Band on the road with him.

"From the first time I saw them perform, I knew they were the band that could help deliver the songs for my solo tour with lethal force. Trust me; this is going to be awesome!” Paul told KOL.

NEW KISS TOUR? PROBABLY;ALBUM? UNLIKELY
(from Billboard.com)
September 15, 2006, 4:00 PM ET

Gary Graff, Detroit
The Kiss Army may be able to pack its gear for a tour in the near future, but not an album. The group's Paul Stanley, preparing for the Oct. 24 release of his solo album "Live To Win" and an attendant tour, tells Billboard.com he's "sure there will be a [Kiss] tour at some point."

He even confirms that one of the ideas being discussed is a traveling version of the orchestral shows Kiss played in 2003 in Australia, which resulted in the "Kiss Symphony" CD and DVD releases.

"It's not out of the realm of possibility," says Stanley, who welcomed his second son, Colin, with wife Erin on Sept. 6. "Anything's possible, but we're far away from conforming or committing to something like that. I'll let you know when it's true."

New Kiss music is another matter, however. Stanley says as far as he's concerned, trying to make a new album in the shadow of Kiss' classic repertoire is, at the very least, a challenge. "The fact is, [fans] may tolerate the new songs, but it's the old ones you want to hear," he notes. "I think Jimmy Page and Robert Plant found that out. The [Rolling] Stones certainly know it. The Who certainly know it. So unless you're willing to go into the studio accepting that how your album will be received will never match your expectations, I'm not sure it's worth the effort."

What would it take to change his mind? Control, Stanley says. "I would consider doing it if I could do it the way I wanted to do it," he explains. "If 'Live to Win' was good for anything, it was me confirming how I believe I'd like music to sound that I'm a part of. To do another Kiss album, I would not be willing to compromise my point of view perhaps as much as I have in recent years."

But how would that go over with longtime Kiss partner Gene Simmons? "Well, y'know, you'll have to see if we go into the studio," replies Stanley -- who says he's not yet watched an episode of Simmons' new A&E reality show, "Gene Simmons Family Jewels."

Stanley takes a break from diaper duty to begin a 15-date solo tour on Oct. 21 in Atlanta.

PAUL STANLEY INTERVIEW
(from http://hometown.aol.com/kissunderground2/ps061.html)
FIRST TO THE FINISH LINE WITH PAUL STANLEY

INTERVIEW BY JOHN JEFFREY

The KISS Underground was honored with the distinction of being one of the first (if not THE first) media outlets that was granted an interview with Paul Stanley - to promote his upcoming "Live To Win" solo CD (due out on October 24th).

During our scheduled interview time, Paul was dealing with some of the trials and tribulations of having a new born baby (Colin Michael Stanley), and had to cut our interview short to tend to his fatherly duties. We barely scratched the surface of the questions I had prepared for the interview, but even with the limited time I had to interview the Starchild, we were able to discuss the creative process of the writing and recording of "Live To Win," and his upcoming solo tour.

KISS Underground: My first question would be, how was recording "Live To Win" different than recording a KISS album, and how did it differ from recording your first, "KISS" solo album ("Paul Stanley" from 1978)?
Paul Stanley: The difference between doing a solo album and a KISS album, or any 'band' album, is that when you do a 'band' album, you're tailoring the material to the specific band (you're recording with), and also taking into account the assets and what the band excels at. So you tend to limit yourself somewhat, whereas when you do a 'solo' album, you can bring in anybody you want for any song. So you really get TOTAL freedom. Both are a reflection of me, the difference is - in a band situation, certainly you have everybody's input more so. There's a certain amount of give and take, and a bit more compromise.
As far as the difference from the first solo album, I've been doing this for THAT much longer and I was pretty clear on what I wanted to do. Outside of that, I don't think it was any different. It's not to say that the (two) albums are the same, but how they were done was the same. I did it without any compromise, and without any thought of what anybody else wanted it to be. If someone thought that this would be a continuation, or a sister/brother album of the first one, they're not taking into account that they're 28 years apart. Certainly the point of view is mine on both (solo albums), and the template for every song I write is melody and a good hook. That's something I always try to do.

K.U.: When listening to either solo album, both are very cohesive records. Even though "Live To Win" has a broader range of song styles than your first, when you hear a song from either record, it sounds like it comes from that album. And like you stated, there is a significant amount of time that has elapsed between the two, and during that time, your song writing has progressed immensely. Even though none of the songs sound like they were written for a KISS album per se, do you think that any of the songs on "Live To Win" fit with any songs you've written on any past KISS albums?

P.S.: I don't really think so. I think the instrumentation and sonics of it are very different from what we've done in the past, as KISS. Maybe some of the songs could have been on KISS albums, but they wouldn't have sounded like this. The last thing I wanted to do with my second solo album, was to do something that sounded "retro" and sound like an 'old' album. That to me was pointless. To pick up from where I left off, would mean that I would have had to do the second album, maybe three years after the first.

K.U.: In the past, you stated that, although you were happy with the results of your songs on "Psycho Circus," you weren't happy with the work environment. What did you do to ensure a better work environment for "Live To Win?"
P.S.: It's simple. I'm the boss and everyone else is gonna listen. [LOL] That makes a very productive work environment. You don't have to watch whether you're stepping on anyone else's toes. Input and collaboration in the studio is a good thing. Compromising because someone has a strong point of view is not.

K.U.: No one could ever say that Paul Stanley has not toured enough. As you are getting ready to embark on your solo tour, is this tour simply being done to promote "Live To Win" or have you had the desire to peform in an outlet outside of the KISS mold?
P.S.: It's both. I'm certainly touring with a purpose and the purpose is to promote an album. In having an album to promote, it gives me a vehicle and a reason to be out there. Otherwise (if I did a solo tour without a new album to promote), I would be out there doing KISS songs and the first solo album [edited to add: like his first solo tour in 1989]. This to me, justifies more of a reason to go out there. Obviously I love doing it (touring). I hadn't looked this forward to anything in a LONG TIME!

K.U.: Are the rumors about the Rockstar: Supernova house band, being your solo tour band, true?
P.S.: Rumors swirl!

K.U.: Um, ok. LOL A lot of fans have been curious as to why your solo tour is so short (15 dates). It's been stated they there MAY be additional dates added, but what's been posted is pretty much it?
P.S.: You gotta start somewhere. I'd rather commit to something short term and add to it, than do something long term and cut it. There's a lot going on right now. I wanna be home with my little boy and my family. (These initial dates) is a chance to go out there and see how it feels. In doing 15 or 18 shows, I get to play every major city in every major market, or close enough to it. For me to go out and do 50 shows wouldn't be any more productive. It would be less productive because it wouldn't be a great use of time.

K.U.: Being that this will be a "Paul Stanley Solo" tour
and not a "KISS" tour, will you pulling out some more
b-side material like on your 1989 solo tour?
P.S.: It's my chance to do EXACTLY what I want. I'll play
the songs that I enjoy and I think are appropriate, and try
to balance things out betweem my solo albums and (my)
KISS songs. In a sense, there is very little difference
between any of them, because they're all written by me.
It should be a good balance and a good mix-up of a lot
of tunes that I really like. Probably some songs that I've
never played before.

K.U.: Could you leave a brief message for the readers of The KISS Underground?
P.S.: Live To Win.

OFFICIAL KISSOLOGY PRESS RELEASE
(from Kissonline)
VH1 Classic Presents 'KISSology: Volume One 1974-1977'
Tuesday September 12, 3:45 pm ET

NEW YORK, Sept. 12 -- Where other bands have fan clubs, KISS has a full-fledged Army of the most rabid and loyal true believers in the world. For more than three decades, the KISS Army has wanted and demanded nothing less than the best from their band and across all those years, that's exactly what KISS has always delivered.
The biggest, baddest, most triumphant show band in rock & roll history, KISS has weathered and transcended the fads, follies and delusions of an industry based on the quick buck and the passing fancy.

In the past thirty years, a thousand musical trends and genres have come and gone and come again -- sensitive singer-songwriters, glam, metal, punk, alternative, garage, roots, new wave, goth, hardcore, grunge, industrial, techno, retro, hip-hop, teenybop pop, boy bands, girl groups, etc. etc. -- and through it all, there has always been KISS.

KISS endures because the band is archetypal, iconic, larger-than-life and louder than thunder. The band, the brand, the blood, the fire and fireworks, the spectacle, the shock and awe and wonder of it all. KISS has always given its Army the Best Rock in the World and neither side has ever settled for less. And, for all the flash and arena-sized theatricality, the core of KISS is really the music, as potent and powerful and connected to the true heart of rock & roll as any band or artist or performer of the past century.

For the KISS Army, the release this Halloween of "KISSology: Volume One 1974-1977" marks the arrival of nothing less than a Holy Grail: 6 solid hours of vintage KISS going all the way back to the deep early roots of the band's classic line-up -- Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss -- captured and re-mastered on 2 state-of-the-art DVDs featuring more than 70 live performances and four full concerts bundled along with unreleased tracks and never-before-seen footage.

The mind-boggling first volume of a definitive three part collection (Volumes Two and Three are being readied for release in 2007) presented by VH1 Classic, "KISSology: Volume One 1974-1977" is a showcase of pristine digitally-restored video coupled with a 5.1 audio mix to provide both stunning visual quality and powerhouse finely-detailed sound designed to meet the approval of the most demanding KISSmaniac.

"KISSology: Volume One 1974-1977" goes all the way back one of the band's earliest live performances in the New York pre-punk glam rock bar scene of the early 1970s before tracing the rocket-paced transformation of KISS into international rock gods who filled the world's largest arenas as the undisputed hottest band in the land by 1977.

A dream come true for the KISS Army, "KISSology: Volume One 1974-1977," contains seldom seen high points of KISStory including significant never- before-available material drawn from the band's own personal video vaults. In addition to four full concerts from the peak of the band's first golden era, the DVD set also features notorious television interviews, early KISS music videos and rare unreleased tracks. Included in the lavish "KISSology: Volume One 1974-1977" package are spell-binding eyewitness liner notes penned by the members of KISS themselves.

Disc One of "KISSology: Volume One 1974-1976" takes a look back at an early bar-band KISS (freshly risen from the shards of Wicked Lester) already thinking much bigger than any of their contemporaries. 1974 is covered with a live concert in Long Beach as well as KISS's televised appearances on ABC's "In Concert" and an interview/performance on "The Mike Douglas Show." By 1975, KISS was playing San Francisco's fabled Winterland, headlining NBC's "Midnight Special" and making videos for "C'mon & Love Me" and their signature "Rock and Roll All Night," all included on "KISSology." In 1976, KISS came to Detroit for an incendiary concert at the Motor City's Cobo Hall, captured on Disc One of "KISSology."

Disc Two of "KISSology" picks up the threads of 1976 with the band's interview and performance of "Black Diamond" on "So It Goes," a must-see and much-discussed interview and performance of "King of the Nighttime World" on "The Paul Lynde Halloween Special," and personal band footage from May 1976. The 1977 material on Disc Two captures the band at the pinnacle of its international fame, performing to tens of thousands of fans at the legendary Budokan Hall in Tokyo in April '77 and, a little more than a month later, headlining "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert." Disc Two closes with scorching concert footage from The Summit in Houston, Texas on September 2, 1977, showing KISS laying down the creed that still beats at the heart of the band: Rock & Roll All Night and Party Every Day!!!

KISS has recorded more gold records than any other American band in history and has sold 80+ million records throughout their career. The group has earned more than 55 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards since receiving its first gold record for "KISS Alive!" in 1975. KISS has performed more than 3500 concerts in front of nearly eighty million fans in virtually every country on planet earth.

"KISSology Volume One 1974-1977" provides ample evidence of why KISS has lasted so long and continues to mean so much to so many millions of people. KISS is 100% dedicated to the heart and soul and power of ROCK and when the house lights go down, KISS is still the hottest band in any land.
