WAYNE JOHNSON

(from rockpages.gr)
We continue our KISS special feature with the 28th interview of a KISS-related figure. This week, Wayne Johnson, shares some details about his guitar solo of “Beth” on CRISS’ “Cat #1”! Here’s an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr:
You played the guitar solo on one of the most famous KISS songs ever (“Beth”). Did you have the chance to listen to the original version?

Wayne Johnson:
Yes…and as with many other fans…it is one of my favorite KISS songs.

Rockpages.gr:
Listening to your version, one can tell that you gave the tune an almost Latin feel on the solo. Do you agree?

Wayne Johnson:
Yes, very good ears you have! I play a lot of acoustic music as well most of which is focused on Latin grooves. I love the percussive aspects of these types of music…different Latin + Flamenco grooves.

NEW KISS TRADING CARDS COMING
(from Kissonline)
Press Pass released preview information for its second set of non-sports cards for the band KISS on Thursday with KISS 360 scheduled for release on Aug. 12

Each box will include 24 packs of five cards with a suggested retail price of $1.99 a pack with autographed and memorabilia cards from the band’s four original members — Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss – included. (Odds still to be determined.)

The 360 set follows on the heels of the popular KISS Ikons set that Press Pass released earlier this year.

There will be a 90-card base set, made up of several subsets — nine Unmasked cards, nine The Demon Speaks cards where Simmons “reveals the secrets to his success,” nine 2009 cards with highlights from this year, 18 Behind the Curtain cards, 12 Road Stories cards, nine Behind Starry Eyes cards, six Welcome to the Show cards and 18 Albums cards focusing on, well, their albums.

The insert card lineup will include Snapshots, a 12-card plastic insert (1:6 packs), and Transformation a six-card lenticular insert featuring mask on/mask off transformations that will be found one per hobby box. Also returning will be the Blood-spitting parallel cards as well as a few other surprises.

BUCKCHERRY TO OPEN FOR KISS ON SUMMER TOUR
(from Billboard)
May 27, 2009 01:03 PM ET

Ray Waddell, Nashville
Buckcherry will support Kiss on all dates for the band's upcoming North American tour, Billboard has learned. The tour, which begins in September, made headlines last month when it was announced that Kiss had partnered with live music social networking site Eventful to route the tour through the top-voted North American markets as determined by demand on the Eventful website.

Voting will continue until June 30 and Buckcherry fans are expected to enter the fray. According to the Kiss camp, more than 8,000 cities and towns are already represented on the fan-submitted list. By voting, fans have the opportunity to purchase pre-sale tickets prior to the general on-sale and will also receive merch discounts and other perks. Fans are also encouraged to create their own viral videos online, motivating their fellow residents to participate in casting votes for a Kiss show in their city. City-specific "best-of" compilation reels of these videos will be shown on jumbo screens at venues before each concert.

INTERVIEW WITH BRUCE KULICK

(from growingbolder.com)
To fans of rock guitar, Bruce Kulick holds a place of ultimate respect. He's not a founding member of KISS, but he was lead guitarist for a decade, helping craft the sound of five successful albums.

And just as important as his music, is his personality. He's the ultimate team player who believes individual ego takes a back seat to the good of the entire band, and that is pretty rare in the music business.

It's part of the reason he's had such a unique perspective of rock over the last three decades. He played guitar for Meat Loaf on the very first Bat Out Of Hell tour, he played on several Michael Bolton albums and for the last decade, he has been the six-string force behind yet another iconic band, Grand Funk Railroad.

This year the band celebrates its 40th anniversary of existence. He's a great storyteller with a passion for his craft. He's one of those few who is exceedingly grateful for every opportunity he's been presented with and takes the time to pay it forward.

ED KANON

(from rockpages.gr)
We continue our KISS special feature with the 27th interview of a KISS-related figure. This week, Ed Kanon, Peter Criss’ long-time drum technician and the guy who replaced Peter behind the drums for a show back in 1997, tells us what he remembers from that experience! Here’s an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr:
You were in the very distinguished place –back in the April of 1997- to replace Peter behind the drums for the KISS concert in Columbus. Describe to us the whole experience and especially your feelings after the end of “Deuce”…

Ed Kanon:
Well, it went really fast. We (the crew) were all set up, ready for the band to do sound check, and we noticed they weren’t even in the building yet. We waited, and waited, and waited. Then the vans pull in. The band gets out, and heads to the dressing rooms. I notice there was no Peter. HHHHMMMMMM?????????? Doc (McGhee) walks up to me and says “Nice Goatee, SHAVE IT!!!!!!”. Then says “Come on, we have to go to the dressing room” The first thing I thought was “Is Peter ok?” I got kind of scared. We walk into the dressing room. Paul is sitting there and says “We have good news, and bad news. Bad news is, Peter can’t do the show. Good news is, you are.” I remember at that moment, I could have freaked out, and probably ruined the whole thing, or don’t even think about it until later, and just do it. I chose the later. I said ok. I thought about the beginnings and endings of all of the songs. I seemed to be ok with everything. I shaved, and started getting into costume. I remember Ace being really pissed off about it. But he ended up playing anyway. Tommy put my makeup on. I knew it would be alright, because I had played with them in sound checks, and a few rehearsals here and there, but never in a show setting with everything happening. Gene was nervous; I could see it on his face. I was cracking jokes with him to lighten the mood a bit. Paul seemed to be confident, or at least did a great job acting like he was. He seemed to be in good spirits. So, we are ready to hit the stage. Next, I remember right before the show. We are on the stage. The rumbling is happening. I’m looking down at the 3 of them, looking at me, in makeup. Looking and my hands and arms, that are covered in jewels from Peters outfit, and thinking, “WOW, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON??????” “Well, here we go.” Deuce started, the concussion hit scared the shit out of me, and we’re off to the races. I fucked up the beginning of “Let me Go”, started it WAY to fast. But it was ok. We picked it right up. Next thing I know is we are most of the way through the show. I haven’t played that long of a set in a long time. My arms were really tired. So, doing some arm yoga, I was able to loosen up and not hit so hard, and the adrenaline was wearing off. Next thing I know. It’s “Rock and Roll all night”, and it’s the end of the show. It went that fast. Then Doc said “You’re gonna look really stupid up there tearing your drums down in the make up.” Doc is got a great sense of humor. They all do actually. It was a surreal experience to say the least.

GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS RETURNS TO A&E FOR AN ALL-NEW SEASON

SEASON FOUR OF THE HIT UNSCRIPTED SERIES PREMIERES SUNDAY, JUNE 7 AT 10 PM ET/PT WITH A SPECIAL ONE-HOUR EPISODE

New York, NY, May 6, 2009 – Legendary rock god and multi-hyphenate Gene Simmons and his unconventional family are back and better than ever for an all-new season of A&E’s hit unscripted series “Gene Simmons Family Jewels,” premiering with a special one-hour episode on Sunday, June 7th at 10:00 PM ET/PT. The 15-episode season kicks off with Sophie’s sweet sixteen party, giving viewers an all access pass to the milestone celebration. When a case of sibling rivalry spirals out of control, Nick pulls on dad's heartstrings and his sense of theatrics to escalate the low key party she wanted into the blowout of the century, all to the dismay of shy Sophie.

In addition to Sophie’s sweet sixteen, the new season will give viewers a behind the scenes look at the entire family’s many adventures. From Gene’s appearance on “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?,” to Gene filming a Japanese monster flick, to Shannon preparing for a role in a roller derby exploitation film, to Nick getting his own apartment, to Sophie fending off ill-intentioned teenaged boys, viewers will follow the Simmons-Tweed clan as they set out to prove, yet again, why they are the most non-traditional, traditional family in America.

Leslie Greif, Adam Reed, Adam Freeman and Gene Simmons are the series executive producers. “Gene Simmons Family Jewels” is produced by The Greif Company and the Gene Simmons Company. Robert Sharenow and Neil A. Cohen are the A&E Executive Producers.

MY 30TH ANNIVERSARY AS A KISS FAN

(from Dan "Bach" Griffiths)
DanBach.jpg (6258 Byte)In the month of May of this year, I’m celebrating 30 years of being a KISS fan. I happened to be watching the BBC’s Top of the Pops programme and up came the video for I was made for loving you, the stage show, the makeup and the parents – What the hell? sealed it for me – been a fan ever since.

People ask me constantly “Why Kiss, Why the makeup, Why this & Why that”? I’ve had to face jokes, sarcasm, comments and physical abuse over my liking of KISS. I defend them now as vigoursly as I did in the beginning. They are “my band” – the makeup, the costumes, the concert shows, the album sleeves artwork & packaging and the music all play their part in the jigsaw; that is my fascination in this band.

My fave track is Hard Times from Dynasty, the first album I bought. That track, Hard Times and Rock n’ Roll Hell, from Creatures, helped me with growing up. Then hearing Crazy, Crazy Nights on national radio in the fall of 1987 it became the UK KISS Army anthem, a feeling of belonging. I would confuse people by requesting No, No. No on the jukebox flipside – that awesome guitar lick by Bruce certainly turned heads.

KISS’s music whether it be original lineup, or the unmasked era or the Reunion era – hits me where it hurts – in my r’n‘r heart. I put a track on and straight away I join in with the words or try to emulate Crisscuola or Caravello or Singer drum patterns. KISS’s music is not technical neither is it simple – it’s good time music; it entertains and it uplifts.

Gene and Paul mention their influences were the British rock invasion of the mid/late 60’s. KISS have greatly influenced me both directly – their music and indirectly – travelling the world to see them.

In my 30 years as a KISS fan I’ve been fortunate in meeting most of the group’s members at conventions, at record store signings, press visits, outside the concert venues. My first KISS concert was at Stafford Bingley Hall, October 1983. I have encountered KISS members at their best and worst, showing they are human beings after all. This communication is to thank all members of KISS for their talent, musicianship, their hospitality and time in making my life a great deal better. It is with deep regret that we have lost two “members of the family” along the way – Paul Caravello and Mark Norton.

Thanks to Chiam Witz, Stanley Eisen, Peter Crisscuola, Paul Frehley, Anton Fig, Paul Caravello, Vinnie Cusano, Mark Norton, Bruce Kulick, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer.

I will be celebrating my fan anniversary with friends, fellow UK KISS fans in the company of the UK tribute band – Dressed to Kill at Bilston, West Midlands on May 15th - www.therobintickets.co.uk/ticketshop/giglist.asp?month=5&year=2009#1614

I’ll be rocking out to tunes I loved in years gone by, still love and will love in years to come.

Who am I? I’m the UK KISS dwarf with the 8 face KISS tattoo on his back, I’m featured on Gene’s Family Jewels, I was invited onstage by Ace at his London solo show, Eric S and Bruce know me from the ESP and Union tours. I have met Peter at Chiller Theater 2006, and Paul Caravello’s family know my dedication to his memory.
