"TAKING DAWN" SUPPORT KISS IN THE UK
(from Taking Dawn MySpace)
Roadrunner’s hottest new band, TAKING DAWN are thrilled to announce that they will be supporting the mighty KISS on their forthcoming UK arena tour this May. The Las Vegas four-piece are currently tearing up the boards with labelmates Airbourne on their tour across Europe and release their debut album, ‘Time To Burn’ on 12th April. The album is already available digitally via i-Tunes and all good digital stores, and you can also check out the video for the title track here:
http://www.youtube.com/takingdawn.

Frontman and guitarist, Chris Babbitt is super excited at the prospect of the KISS tour, enthusing: “I still think my guys are fucking with me. Isn’t Ashton Kutcher supposed to punk only famous people? Not even in 100,000 years did I think we’d really be opening for KISS...especially after the third farewell tour! We’ve got our Love Gun locked and loaded, and can’t wait to strut the same stage as our heroes. This is such an honour it’s almost too overwhelming for words”.

MORE LOST 1980 "UNMASKED TOUR" FILMS POSTED TO PROMOTOE AUCTIONS
Two additional segments from the recently discovered 1980 film reel of KISS's Unmasked tour have been published online to promote the never ending auctions of eBay seller EliteWorks.

As previously reported, the footage was recorded during KISS's first tour across Australia. The band were promoting their Unmasked album at the time; with new drummer, Eric Carr, in place behind the skins.

Both 30-year old clips can be seen below.

Auctions highlights this week include: proof sheets for the 1977 Marvel KISS comic book; the 1982 Flo & Eddie press kit, several lots of rare 1970s local KISS cover story magazines, photos from all eras of the band-including the rarely seen 1975 photo session which inspired the cover art for Destroyer, an original 1978 KISS Army fan club kit, Eric Carr's 1980s business card, and even a ticket to KISS's self promoted 1973 Hotel Diplomat concert.

The KISS auctions can be viewed viewed here.

1977 MARVEL COMIC PROOF SHEETS ON EBAY
(from eBay/EliteWorks)
These are the ORIGINAL 1977 proof sheets for the first KISS MARVEL Comic Book. These two vintage pieces of 11” x 17” paperwork contain the original first draft version of Steve Gerber’s historic “Blood On The Plates” article (which appeared in the comic book) with handwritten corrections by Howard Marks Advertising Copy Editor and KISS: The Real Story Author Peggy Tomarkin.
You can see firsthand, where in the 1970s, no detail was too small for the KISS organization, including the running order of the KISS band members names; which was corrected from “Gene, Ace, Paul and Pete” to “Gene, Paul, Peter and Ace.” This AMAZING one-of-a-kind collectable is the only copy in the world and shows that even in 1977 Gene and Paul were favored, by the powers that be, as the lead members of KISS. This first draft is quite different from what appeared in the final version of the comic book.

magModernDrummer2010-05USA.jpg (127670 Byte)ERIC SINGER IN "MODERN DRUMMER" MAGAZINE
(from eric-singer.com)
Just being himself
by Billy Amendola

For eighteen years, Kiss’s drummer has helped his world-famous band stay in our hearts and on the radio by doing what he does best—being himself. In this special online extra from his May 2010 MD cover story, we begin by asking Eric about…

The Band’s Younger Fans
In 2004 we did the Rock The Nation Tour, and then we didn’t do any kind of full-length touring until last year in Europe, and that’s where we really noticed the resurgence. All those shows did extremely well for us, and we noticed the age demographic had completely changed. All of a sudden there were a lot of young kids, and when we’d ask, “Hey, how do you know about Kiss?”—thinking that maybe their parents were Kiss fans—a lot of them said, “We found you on the Internet through YouTube”…or through Guitar Hero…or Rock Band. So it’s the kids themselves discovering Kiss. And next thing you know, they go out and buy the CDs or videos. And then next thing you know, they want to come see the band live!

Surviving The Music Business
I look back now at all the drummers who’ve attained longevity in the music business…it’s not an easy task. Being a journeyman musician is different from being in a band. If you’re not a songwriter, or you’re not the principal owner of a successful band, to survive in this business is very hard work. A lot of drummers talk in interviews about their workout regimen and “I’m working on this ostinato thing where I’m playing this with my left hand,” and that’s all great and fine. But the majority of people will never be able to use that kind of technical ability unless they create some kind of niche for themselves. Ultimately most players just want to have a career in music, whether it’s as a studio musician or being in a band with some success, where they can just play for a living.

KISS COFFEEHOUSE TO OPEN IN MELBOURNE?

(from theage.co.au)
THEIR famous faces have adorned posters, T-shirts and even lunchboxes for a generation, so it was only a matter of time before rock legends KISS ended up on a coffee mug.

Rumours have circulated for more than a year about a KISS venture in Melbourne. If all goes to plan, December 31 will see the opening of KISS CoffeeHouse Melbourne, directly opposite Crown Casino, complete with memorabilia from the band's 35-year rock'n'roll career.

The Melbourne man who negotiated the deal with the band, Steve Agi, is calling on investors to buy into his $5 million cafe and family restaurant.

Agi is a coffee fanatic who spent more than a year negotiating with founding band members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley for the Australian rights to the KISS CoffeeHouse business. He plans to spend $1.5 million revamping the vacant Tea House building at 28 Clarendon Street, opposite Crown Metropol hotel and next to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

One KISS CoffeeHouse exists, at Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. It opened in 2006 and displays band memorabilia and sells merchandise. A seven-metre KISS boot marks the entrance, while the coffee is said to be ''hotter than hell'' and it only comes in two sizes - gold and platinum.

According to the investor proposal for the KISS CoffeeHouse Unit Trust, which was emailed to potential backers at the weekend, six shares in the business are being touted at $250,000 each. Each share will give the owner 5 per cent equity in Melbourne's KISS CoffeeHouse.

The rest will be controlled by Agi, who pays a licence fee to KISS and to New York Stock Exchange-listed Live Nation, which owns the band's merchandise rights.

DYNASTY TV APPEARANCE SURFACES ON YOUTUBE TO PROMOTE AUCTIONS

A rarely seen 1979 Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley local TV interview has been posted online to promote the never ending KISS memorabilia auctions of eBay seller EliteWorks.

This week's auctions, which end on Sunday afternoon, include several highly sough after official 1970s KISS items, such as the 1978 trash can, the Thermos backpack, and the 1976 Cadillac High School "KISS special" newspaper. An originnal stage used Peter Criss "Beth" rose, photographs from a 1974 press conference, factory sealed KISS posters lot and lots of additional items.

PAUL STANLEY: ROCK'N ROLL ALL NITE, PAINT EVERY DAY

(from City Link/Joanie Cox)

Best-known as the face-painting, groupie-bedding frontman of the rock band Kiss, Paul Stanley has spent the past five years building a career as an abstract painter. Stanley’s vivid, colorful works include paintings of hearts, stars and even the Statue of Liberty, hardly subject matter you’d expect from the man who co-wrote “Lick It Up” and “Rock and Roll All Nite.” Stanley will present some of these paintings today and tomorrow at the Wentworth galleries in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, respectively. Joanie Cox recently talked to the rocker about his art, Lady Gaga and why kids like Kiss.

When did you learn to paint?
I discovered I wanted to paint about 10 years ago. Whether or not somebody can paint is really subjective.

NEW "ELDER" ERA OUTTAKES RELEASED TO PROMOTE AUCTIONS

Over ten minutes of never-before-seen, KISS interview "outtake" segments have been released to promote the auctions of eBay seller EliteWorks.

On January 5, 1982, KISS members, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, visited New York's MetroMedia TV Studios to promote their poorly received, concept album, Music From The Elder. During the taping, Simmons and Stanley even participated in a comedy sketch where they threw a stuffed animal through a burning hula hoop of fire. The posting of these final three "outtake" clips, concludes the year-long rollout of the lost 28-year old, interview which was published in ten parts.

This week's auctions include: the 1976 Cadillac High School "KISS special" newspaper, a stage used Peter Criss "Beth" rose, original photographs from a 1974 press conference, the 1970s KISS garbage can, several vintage KISS cover story magazines-including a 1973 Melody Maker Page 1 article on NY Glam Rock, a factory sealed posters lot and several additional items.

The KISS auctions can be viewed here.

The final three Elder "outtake" segments can be seen below:

KISS REVEAL THE SECRETS TO GREAT MAKE-UP
(from ITN)
They have spent more than 30 years wearing their distinctive make-up and now heavy metallers Kiss are letting us in on the secret to their trademark look.

The group revealed they think of it like war paint and have always applied it themselves.

Drummer Eric Singer said: "It's part of the ritual, it's like preparing for battle. I don't think anybody had wardrobe people putting their armour and battle gear on when soliders would go out and fight. Every soldier prepares his gun and knows how it works and we do the same thing."

The band has spent years perfecting its regime and could probably teach many women a thing or two.

Singer said: "There is a proper technique for putting the make-up on and a proper way for taking it off. Everybody thinks: 'My god, it must be so damaging'. Actually it's not."

"It's oil-based," added frontman Gene Simmons. "You wind up washing your face more and that's the best thing you can do for your skin."

KISS LONDON GIG REVIEW

(from metal-rules.com)
KISS treated their fans and VIP/media –people with very special one off club show in London Islinghton’s O2 Academy. This was a historical show in many ways, or should we say “Kisstorical”, because this was their smallest gig in 22 years. It was back in 1988 when KISS last time played such a club show in Marquee Club in London in front of just few hundred people. The purpose of this show was to help promote bands upcoming SONIC BOOM OVER EUROPE –tour.

GENE SIMMONS MAKES GOOD ON LABEL THREAT

(from billboard.biz)
By Robert Thompson, Toronto

Sixteen months after announcing the reformation of Simmons Records in partnership with Universal Music Canada, Kiss bassist Gene Simmons has finally inked a deal, signing Toronto rock band The Envy.

The signing is a joint venture with Montreal-based Remedy Music, a division of Crystal Math Management, the company that has the likes of Metric and The Midway State on its roster.

“We have embarked upon fulfilling our mandate—to discover new and exciting Canadian talent and to take them around the world,” Simmons said in a statement.

The Envy, who formed in early 2009, are presently recording with JUNO award-winning producer Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Metric, Three Days Grace) as well as the songwriter/producer Desmond Child (Katy Perry, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Tokio Hotel) for their Simmons/UMC debut release. No release date was announced. Last year, the band toured across Canada with the likes of Marianas Trench, The Midway State and Stereos.

E1 & KISS TO CREATE NEW TV SERIES
(from Kissonline)
Leading independent studio E1 Entertainment has finalized a production and development deal with legendary rock band KISS. E1 will tap the worldwide enthusiasm for the KISS brand, collaborating with founding members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley to create a comedic half-hour kids television series that galvanizes the band's iconic personas for its young fans.

"We're honored to be involved in carrying on the KISS legacy," comments Frank Saperstein, Senior VP of Kids and Animation for E1. "It's wonderful to collaborate with the creative forces behind one of the greatest rock bands of all time and unquestionably one of the most recognized worldwide."

E1 has snagged the KISS brand as it eclipses its roots, building energy in new family and youth media outlets. KISS's role as the face of Dr. Pepper, their significant presence during Super Bowl XLIV, and their appearance on the 2009 "American Idol" finale, which reached over thirty million viewers, has made the make-up and leather-clad giants a household name for kids and families today. The KISS tradition continues to grow generation after generation transcending age, race and creed.

"KISS continues to be the juggernaut of licensing and merchandising, from KISS M&M's to KISS Dr Pepper," remarks KISS co-founder Gene Simmons, "KISS is a band, but also the only music BRAND. Continuing in our 35-year history of going where no band has gone before, we are proud to partner with E1. Like all things KISS, we intend to make this a very special show for our fans."

"We couldn't be more excited. Coupling E1's successes and ingenuity with the global force of KISS guarantees an express pass into the homes of our youngest KISS Army members with a show of superior quality," adds KISS co-founder Paul Stanley.

The as-yet-untitled series will be produced and distributed worldwide by E1. Executive Producers are John Morayniss and Frank Saperstein for E1 Entertainment; Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS. E1 and KISS will handle all licensing and merchandise for the series.

KISS IN LONDON: THEN AND NOW
(from Classic Rock)
Welcome to Classic Rock’s new occasional column Then And Now, where we look at classic gigs past and present. We kick off this week with Xavier Russell comparing Kiss across three (or should that be four?) decades.

Xavier first saw Kiss way back in 1976 when they headlined the Hammersmith Odeon and hadn’t clapped eyes on them for some 30 odd years. This week he finally saw Kiss again, when they did a their low-key club gig at London’s Islington O2 Academy.

THEN
Venue: Hammersmith Odeon, London
Date: May 15, 1976
Kiss first came to my attention when I heard Kiss Alive, the classic double album recorded at Detroit’s legendry Cobo Hall in 1975. I remember being blown away by the rawness of the production, and by the whole look and concept of Kiss. I just had to see them LIVE. As luck had it they were due to play two nights at the Hammy Odeon (as it was affectionately known back then) but could I get a ticket? No chance. Both gigs sold out in two hours flat!

“If you come to a KISS show and you’re expecting us to comment on acid rain, whales, global warming, BOY are you at the wrong concert. GENE SIMMONS - Well we could probably kill you. That’s why we have backyard. Sonic boom is continuation of something that has been going on for two years. Started a year an half ago in Melbourne. We are changing the show. Too much pride in what we do to bring the same show back in.

BECKY - Still enjoy performing as much?

GENE - How many people get a chance to wear more makeup and high heels than your mommy does?

BECKY (from viewer) – What’s more important makeup or music?

GENE - We played ten years without makeup. But I tell you if you ask any girl she’ll tell you the same thing KISS will tell you, it’s always more fun when you wear something black, put on your makeup and high heels.
By the way. Men wore makeup first. It was the warriors and shamans. YOU Took it.

BECKY - Anything you can do differently in your career?

GENE SIMMONS – We lead our lives in a decidedly different way. NO regrets no woulda coulda shoulda. Do everything to the fullest. If I have a tomb stone I know exactly what its going to say “thank you and good night.” Rape and pillage the fruits of life and do everything to the fullest.

BECKY – How was the decision made to alter the lead singers in the band?

GENE - Since the beginning of the band the idea was “we’re delusional” we want to put together the beatles on steroids. Bigger, Better, a treat for the eyes, a treat for the ears. And anybody can sing. Eric sings his butt off.

BECKY – Appeal to audie

GENE - The magic of what KISS does is that if you show your three year-old whether it’s your granddaughter or grandson, immediately they take to KISS. It’s called audio visual, it really is show. If you appeal to the eye and you have the tunes to connect, it’s a full body experience.
We want to change this world into Planet KISS.

BECKY – What do you want audiences to get out of this?

GENE SIMMONS – If you come to a KISS’ show and you’re expecting us to comment on acid rain, whales, global warming, BOY are you at the wrong concert. I’m so sick and tired of politicians asking rock stars what they think of the politics of the world. I would certainly never ask a politician how’s that new Rock song you’re working on.

BECKY – Of all the media about KISS– what was the most outlandish of stories to hit a raw nerve if any?

ERIC, SINGER– You can’t take yourself too seriously. The greatest was when people thought Gene had a cows tongue sewed on.

GENE – We have no right to complain about being miserable. Its one of the reasons we didn’t form a grunge band. How do you sing miserable songs when you’re rich?

KISS DOES A HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING
(from ESPN)
It was 1974 -- the straight-laced football heyday of Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler -- and in northern Michigan, you could hear a pin drop in the way-too-tight Cadillac High School football locker room before games.

That's when an enterprising assistant coach named Jim Neff had a brainstorm. Why not rev up the Cadillac defense by playing a little pregame rock and roll? Like, for example, KISS?

PAUL: SHOW LEFT US BREATHLESS
(from Kissonline)
Last night's KISS show in London was cut short because the Co2 canisters used to blast confetti during Rock and Roll All Nite made breathing nearly impossible. Both the band and fans upstairs and in front of the stage were having difficulty breathing from the concentration of Co2 in the air.

Paul reveals, "Once the confetti cannons went off, we barely made it off stage. None of us could breathe or catch our breath. Each of us thought we were the only one until we saw each other. Pretty scary and there was no way we could continue. We came out for the encores but couldn't get past one. Still, all in all, an amazing night that left many breathless!"

KISS - REVIEW
(from rushonrock.com)
Catching Paul and Gene in a club venue four decades after the band first set out to recruit the Kiss Army is a surreal experience.
Everything about the band for the past 30 years has been big. Big arenas, big anthems, big heels and big money. But here they were, back to their rock and roll roots and, quite emphatically, back to their best.

Although the gig was short, fans were extremely excited to see Kiss play in such a small club.
Photos can be seen here and here. There was no merchandise available, no blod spitting, just pre Rock'n Roll.
Paul said, that they are going to play some songs on the European tour, which they haven't played in a long time. Kiss played for about 70 minutes.
Before the show, Kiss did a lot of interviews for the European press.

SET LIST "ACADEMY OF MUSIC" 1973 ON SALE ON EBAY
(from eliteworks/eBay.com)
This set list is for the final KISS concert of 1973 (their first year as a band!) and predates the release of the first KISS album by six weeks! On New Year's Eve 1973, KISS were added onto the bill of a Blue Oyster Cult/Iggy Pop/Teenage Lust concert at the last minute. This is the concert where Gene burned himself onstage doing the fire trick and accidentally threw flashpaper into a fan's face.

If you look up the 12/31/73 KISS performance (on page 27) of KISS Alive Forever you'll notice the line about "a planned encore of 'Baby, Let Me Go' was scrapped." Well, this set list is how the authors knew about that song being included in the show. "Baby, Let Me Go" (which is better known as "Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll") would later appear on the second KISS album, Hotter Than Hell.

The set list is hard to photograph but will display beautifully on your wall or in your KISS collection. The reverse side of the set list contains the mic or soundboard levels for each member, their gear, and effects (siren, etc).
The never-before-seen pictures of KISS 1) posing with label president Neil Bogart at the Fillmore East-January 1974 and 2) recording their first LP at Bell Sound Studios in November 1973 (which were all taken by the same KISS roadie) are shown here only to authenticate the set list and they are NOT included with the auction.

LARRY HARRIS
(from rockpages.gr)
Rockpages Web Magazine did an interview with Casablanca Records' Vice President, Larry Harris, for the promotion of his excellent book regarding the label. Here's an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr:
How you would describe in a few words Neil Bogart?

Larry Harris:
Neil was a great marketing genius. He also was a gambler who bet on things that others would never do- No one wanted KISS in the beginning, Donna Summer was turned down by everyone. He was Mike Todd, PT Barnum rolled into one very talented driven guy.

Rockpages.gr:
Do you think that he has ever gotten the credit that he rightfully deserved?

Larry Harris:
I think Neil will finally get the credit he deserves due in part to this book and other things that should be happening in the near future.

SOUNDCHECK PHOTOS FROM LONDON
(from Kissonline)
KISSonline was lucky enough to be at tonight's soundcheck at O2 Academy in London! If tonight was any indication of what the audience can expect tomorrow night, KISS is going to destroy the 02 when the KISS Army packs this small club! The extended soundcheck was extra-long, with the band tearing through 16 songs, including "Say Yeah," "Calling Dr. Love," and "100,000 Years!" The band was clearly in good spirits, joking around on stage, and it was so much fun to watch them work out how to do their signature moves in such a small space, especially with regard to "Black Diamond" and "Deuce!"

Rock legends KISS have sold more than 80 million album sales worldwide, making them one of the most iconic bands on the planet.

Rock legends KISS are coming to Connect the World. (Roadrunner Records)
Founded in New York City in 1972, the distinctive foursome and their unique brand of rock showmanship have unleashed 19 albums during their astounding 38-year career.

With hits like "Hotter Than Hell" and "God of Thunder," KISS have carved a niche in the rock landscape thanks to incendiary performances and stadium-shaking anthems.

This summer the band will plough their way across Europe, promoting their latest album "Sonic Boom," which was released last year.
