He wrote fans several handwritten pages to thank them and to tell them about his new album and his future plans. Such a handwritten letter to a fan is currently listed on eBay:

NEW KISS BIOGRAPHY IS ACE
(from rockaaa.com)
Guitarist reveals all in new ghost-written autobiography.

Great news for KISS fans: Ace Frehley’s autobiography, “No Regrets,” is confirmed to be published on November 1.

Co-written by New York Times journalist Joe Layden, “No Regrets: A Rock N’ Roll Memoir” is being billed as “a funny, truthful, candid memoir about a hard-drinking, drug-addicted, music-loving guitar player who lived life as a rock star and survived to tell the tale.”
For Ace, it all started in January of 1973, when the self-taught musician and Bronx native spotted an advertisement in the Village Voice posted by Paul Stanley, Peter Criss and Gene Simmons: “Guitarist wanted with flash and balls.” Frehley, figuring he had both, answered the ad, and the rest was history/KISStory.

Within a few years, KISS was playing its spectacular live shows to sold-out stadiums all over the world, decked out in their iconic costumes and makeup. The band was raking in millions of dollars on tours, albums, and merchandise, and the rabid KISS Army numbered in the six figures. Frehley, known as “The Spaceman,” had transformed from a scrappy, music-obsessed kid to one of the most famous and revered guitarists of his era, hailed by critics and adored by fans.
“No Regrets” goes behind the make-up, the money, the women, and the partying. Frehley recounts his battles with drug addiction and his brushes with death, sets the record straight about his complicated relationships with Simmons and Paul Stanley, and describes his evolution as a musician.
Frehley performed with KISS from its inception in 1973 until his first departure in 1982, before rejoining KISS in 1996 for a very successful reunion tour. Frehley’s second stint lasted until 2002 as Ace returned to his solo career.

According to publishers Simon & Schuster, Ace will be appearing at Barnes & Noble in New York City (555 5th Avenue at 46th Street) for a book signing on November 3 at noon.

KISS AT CASINO RAMA (CONCERT REVIEW)
(from Fangoria.com)
As many Fango readers know already, your editor is indeed a card-carrying member of the Kiss army (literally; the card is in my wallet, in front of my driver’s license). I have been a serious fan since I was a little boy, borrowing Kiss records from the library, eventually saving up my allowance to get my first slab of vinyl—which was, oddly, THE ELDER (because of this, I still have warm ties to that controversial, commercially DOA 1981 rock opera…in fact, it might be my favorite in the catalog).

BLACKIE LAWLESS ON ACE FREHLEY

(from Rockpages.gr)
Blackie Lawless talks to Rockmachine.gr just before two upcoming W.A.S.P. shows in Thessaloniki, and Athens (July 25th, and 26th), where he also talks about his connection with Ace Frehley. Here is an excerpt from the interview:

I’ve got one more question from the past. Is it true that you were hanging with Ace Frehley and he really came very close to produce W.A.S.P.’s first album?

Blackie Lawless: Well, Ace and I were good friends even when I was a teenager. He was going to produce our first album, but he didn’t! he came to California, we talked about it for a while, and then he got busy doing a project, he had left KISS already, this was 1982, and he was starting to put his own band together and really what a lot of people don’t know is that when he came to California to see me, Bill Aucoin was with him. Bill Aucoin came very close managing the band, very close! Then I met Rod Smallwood, not long after that, and decided to go with Rod instead and we took a different direction, and as I said Ace was putting his own band together at the time, and that’s why it didn’t happen, but he came pretty close producing our first record…

INTERVIEW WITH ERIC SINGER

(from Bravewords)

BW&BK scribe Mitch Lafon recently caught up with KISS drummer Eric Singer, discussing a variety of subjects in anticipation of the band's July 24th appearance at Heavy MTL.

Singer: "KISS has always been somewhat of a unifying and polarizing band. Just like buying a car buying a car or eating at a restaurant – you go by participation. If I don’t like something I don’t buy it. I don’t support it. You vote with your wallet, but KISS is about the show and about having a good time. Being in KISS is a lot of hard work. It’s not easy like everybody thinks. I’ve been in a lot of bands and nothing takes the amount of energy, effort and work as it does to play in KISS. I’ve seen Paul almost yawning before he goes on stage, but when the lights go down – BAM. He’s running around, jumping…What’s important is when you are on that stage. That’s when you have to give 100%..”

A RARE SNAPSHOT OF COLLEGE RADIO IN THE 70'S PART 1: KISS
(from The Vinyl District)
A few years ago I struck vinyl gold while living in Dallas, TX. A friend of mine from Good Records (Chris Penn aka DJ Cee Pee), put together two boxes of hand picked metal records for me. He had  just picked up several hundred used records from a Dallas college radio station as they were throwing them out and going digital. Although many of the classic albums included had some pretty good wear going on with the sleeves, the actual vinyl was in excellent condition. It was a vast selection of 70s and 80s metal; a gift from the vinyl gods above.

Back in the 70s, college radio stations would put notes on the front of each record with comments from other DJs at the station along side a description of the band. Reading these notes today can be quite entertaining as you are about to see. Here are two gems from KISS along with the original notes and comments from the DJs themselves.

It was time for the real thing.
KISS tribute bands have been fluttering through Northeast Wisconsin this past year, but it was finally the right moment for Gene Simmons and the gang to show the boys how it’s done.
The theatrical rock spectacle known as KISS, literally lit up Ford Festival Park in Oshkosh Saturday night, with a stage rig that made 4th of July look like a fountain with a wet wick.

LONGTIME KISS FANS PASSIONATE FOR YEARS

(from sj-r.com)

You always remember your first time.
For Mike Austin, it was in St. Louis at the old Checkerdome.
“I had to sneak out of the house and lie to the parents to get to go,” he said. “I had to catch a ride with other people who had tickets.”
He was 14. It was the autumn of ’79. It was Kiss.
“After I saw them once, that was all it took,” he said.
Austin, who was living in Pawnee at the time, saw his first Springfield Kiss show in 1983.

THE 21 BEST KISS SONGS

(from Guitar World)

Here is where my story with Kiss began. I was in the seventh grade and was a young hell-raising thrash kid into Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax, Overkill and Metallica.
One day my best friend had a Hit Parader magazine that he brought to school, and he said, “Dave, check these dudes out." When I saw Kiss on the cover, they had that whole "Japanese Kabuki meets outer-space warrior" vibe to them, and as a 12- or 13-year-old kid, I thought they ruled instantly. I didn’t even really care what kind of music they played or if they even played music at all. I was hooked.

IS IT TIME TO KISS AND MAKE UP?

(from The Gazette)

Signs of détente in the feud between band and its critics
By MARK LEPAGE, Freelanceene

In the end, it's all about forgiveness.

There's a vignette of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons from a few years back that neatly captures that sentiment. Simmons was in his native and beloved Israel, where he was born Chaim Witz, visiting the grave of the father who'd abandoned the family when Gene was a child. Simmons had little good to say of the man in any interview I'd read on the subject. But here he was, becoming "visibly shaky as he entered the cemetery, where he put a kippa on his head as he approached the grave. After breaking down in tears, he said, 'I am so stupid. Why didn't I go to see him before he died?' "

PODKISST #47 & #48
(from podkisst.com)
Check out Podkisst # 47 with an interview with Eddie Balandas. Eddie is known to the KISS Army as the booming voice you hear at the start of “Alive II,” and he was kind enough to share his insights from life on the road with KISS at the height of their 1970's stardom!
If you’re a fan of Klassic KISS – particularly the 1978 “Paul Stanley” album – you won't miss PodKISSt # 48! Travel back in time to December of ’78 for a vintage interview with the Starchild himself. Plus, PodKISSt correspondent Travis Humbert brings us an exclusive interview with Craig Krampf, the legendary drummer (for Steve Perry, the Motels, Kim Carnes, Melissa Etheridge, and many more!) who played on side 2 of Paul’s 1978 album. And if that’s not enough, producer/songwriter Matt Walters checks in with another of his “Mainline” editorials! Tonight you belong to PodKISSt!

BRIAN MACKEY: KISS IS THE "ONLY ROCK'N ROLL BRAND"
(from dansvilleonline.com)
In the band’s nearly four-decade history, Kiss has never had a No. 1 single.

But that hasn’t stopped the group from selling millions of albums, singles and videos over the years. The band’s popularity comes in part from its relentless, shameless self-promotion of not only the music but a countless array of products.

GENE AND SHANNON URGE FANS TO ADOPT, NOT SHOP FOR PETS
(from contactmusic.com)
Rocker Gene Simmons and girlfriend Shannon Tweed have banded together to urge fans to adopt animals, rather than shop around for pets.

Tweed recently took her young nephew to a local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals shelter in Canada to pick out a puppy, and after she saw how many dogs and cats were in need of a home, she made a $10,000 (£6,250) donation on the spot.

But the reality TV star wanted to do more for the organisation and so she persuaded the Kiss star to join her in a playful promotional video to encourage others to adopt, instead of spending money on a new pet at a store.

In the video, she says, "I want to tell you that you should adopt a pet from the Saskatoon Spca. They've got great animals down there."

And Simmons jokingly threatens: "Do it or we'll find out where you live."

It is unclear as to when the video was shot, but suggests Tweed and Simmons are still very much together following recent public spats on TV about the rock star's womanising ways.

KISS SOAR OVER NEW HAMPSHIRE IN STRIPPED-DOWN CONCERT
(from Ultimate Classic Rock)
Even using only a portion of their typical stage setup, Kiss delivered a dazzling concert to a packed crowd at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H. last night.

The band is taking a break from recording their next studio album to play a relatively brief series of concerts in smaller towns, the kind of places they haven’t played in several years, in what they’re dubbing the “Lost Cities” tour.

Their full arsenal of ramps, lights and flying rigs won’t fit in these venues, so the band had to rely a bit more on their music to entertain the crowd. Accordingly, Paul Stanley and company chose an 18-song set list heavy on classic rockers from their ’70s heyday, which they performed in a faithful, muscular and energetic manner.

A band that made its career rocking live shows in makeup and futuristic, demonic costumes is coming to Manchester.

KISS never soared to the top of music charts — it only had two songs, “Beth” and “Forever,” reach the top 10 in the U.S. singles chart. But the band made the most of its legendary stage show, and the Starchild, Demon, Spaceman and Catman, also known as Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, respectively, will bring that show to the Verizon Wireless Arena on Tuesday, July 12.

DECIBEL GEEK VINNIE VINCENT PODCAST

(from DecibelGeek Podcast/Chris Czynszak)

This episode is a long time coming and I hope it will inform people that have always wondered "What the hell happened to Vinnie Vincent?"

[...]Joining me in part 1 of this Vinnie Vincent Special are former WASP, Steeler, & SIN bassist Rik Fox who shares with me his shock at, what he claims, was his song being ripped off by the Vinnie Vincent Invasion shortly after letting Vinnie and band mate Dana Strum listen to his demo and the icy reception he received when trying to settle the dispute.

Also joining me is Keli Raven, a veteran Los Angeles musician that was breaking into the scene back in 1991 and worked with Vinnie Vincent on the still-unreleased Guitars from Hell album. Raven also was involved with some of the music for writing sessions for KISS' Revenge album and was witness to Gene Simmons & Vinnie Vincent's creative process. Unfortunately, Keli states that Vinnie continuously lived up to a bad reputation that he had built by that time.

VISIT TO FATHER'S GRAVE IN ISRAEL BRINGS GENE SIMMONS TO TEARS

(from Isreal National News)

Rock star Gene Simmons of KISS fame was reduced to uncontrollable tears when he visited the grave of his estranged father during a recent visit to his native Israel, where his emotions expressed the unbreakable bond with Israel and the ties between father and son.

This video is available courtesy of Radaronline.com

His father left him and his mother, a Holocaust survivor, when he was a child. Simmons grew up in New York, studying in yeshiva for a while before abandoning tradition and gradually working his way up the entertainment ladder.

Simmons became visibly shaky as he entered the cemetery, where he put a kippa on is head as he approached the grave. After breaking down in tears, he said, “I am so stupid. Why didn’t I go to see him before he died?

He later said in an interview, “I was arrogant. I wanted to prove I didn’t need him. I never saw him again until I stood over his grave.”

Simon’s painful memories of a child overcame him at the graveside visit, and he muttered amid tears, “I am a good father. You would be proud.”

In the video of Simmon’s visit to the cemetery, he read a letter his father left behind. The elder Simmons said that World War II, wars in Israel and personal “tragedies” prevented him from progressing economically despite his education. “I am going to finish my life as a nobody, as a nothing,” he wrote in the letter.

“The only thing I can be proud of is my children. They are all beautiful and talented. I am very happy that you are happy.”

In a separate video posted on Israel National News last month, Simmons expressed his firm support for Israel, distaste for boycotts and anger at U.S. President Barack Obama’s demands that the Jewish state surrender land to the Palestinian Authority.
