PAUL STANLEY INTERVIEW
(from pix 11 morning news)

Rock icon Paul Stanley of KISS stopped by the studio to talk about his New Jersey's Wentworth Gallery hosting two of his art exhibits and KISS' summer concert tour. Stanley was known as "The Starchild" during his KISS days.

As an art major and graduate of the prestigious High School of Music and Art in New York City, Stanley returned to his painting in 2005, to share the deep emotions his art conveys. His portraits and abstracts are emotionally charged compositions. He aims to maximize the direct, physical impact of his paintings through scale, texture, vivid color and simplicity of images.

DID YOU KNOW...
... that there were two different Kiss toy guitars available in the '70s?

There was a cheap version and a more expensive version. Both versions are very rare, especially in sealed condition. The cheaper version came sealed on a cardboard and had only nylon strings. The more expensive version came in a cardboard box and had 3 nylon strings and 3 wire strings.
The more expensive version in sealed condition is now on eBay.

DEREK SHERINIAN
(from rockpages.gr)

Rockpages.gr conducted an exclusive interview with keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Planet X, Alice Cooper, KISS, Yngwie Malmsteen etc.). Here's an excerpt where Derek talks about his years with KISS among other things...

Rockpages.gr:
Was there any concert during that tour that KISS let you up on stage or you were constantly behind the stage?

Derek Sherinian:
I was behind the stage during the whole tour…but it was really cool to see the guys one month before the start of the tour…I mean, during the rehearsals. I couldn’t believe that I was on the same stage as Gene and Paul. That’s a great memory…Years later, they called me and asked me to play with them on the Ramones tribute (ed.note: KISS recorded “Rock N Roll Radio”)…very cool song, by the way! It’s always nice to see the guys in L.A.

"Kiss Kompendium", whatever this might be, is listed on Amazon for a special pre-order price of $ 47,25. According to the product details it is written by Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons, comes in a Hardcover and includes 1280 pages (!!). Another great pic from a die hard fan, bought recently on ebay.

GENE COMMENTS ON VANCOUVER 1975 SHOW
(from Kissonline)
The day after that show (in Vancouver, BC) I was interviewed by Bob Geldorf, who would later go on to form his own band, The Boomtown Rats. He also started the Live Aid rock charity. At that time, he was a writer for the Georgia Straight, a local paper. I remember he started the interview with something like "you guys weren't serious up there, were you." I told him we would become the biggest band in the world and that he didn't understand what rock and roll was.

It was clear we had a different point of view. Years later, when I finally got to see his band, the Boomtown Rats, I remember thinking: "..he can't be serious up there..." They soon broke up.

KISS? We're celebrating our 35th Anniversary!

INTERVIEW WITH BRUCE KULICK
(from Deucenews)
Friday 13th February, Eric Singer Project live in Roncade Italy, interview with Bruce Kulick
Hi Bruce welcome to Italy!

How the tour is going on so far?
"Really well, every night we find a lot of people so happy to see us.
It was two years now we did not come to Europe and thanks to the fact that KISS have just been here Eric's name is on everyone's mouth.
A lot of people don't want to miss the chance to see him at work in a more private environment than the stadiums KISS uses to play."
Yes, not to mention you, I would add!
We are in front of 4 great musicians!
Why do you tour only in Europe and not in the U.S.?
I have many friends there, which would be more then happy to see ESP live.
"The American market is too vast for us, you know.
In the U.S. tours mean to travel long distances with obvious consequences on the costs side, without considering the very high number of bands around.

Only in Los Angeles, where we live, there are an incredible number of local groups, the competition is sky high.
Here in Europe is quite different, we can condense in a few days a large number of dates and optimize the logistics that is significantly different from what's in our home land.
Then we organize some dates along with KISSKonvention, so we also do Q&A sessions and the fans are so happy about it, like we did in Germany and then in Norway and Sweden."
I turn my head for a while to take a note where I wrote the salient data of the next Bruce album (BK3) and Eric comes in, I say hallo and he looks puzzled, he turns to Bruce questioning with his eyes.
And Bruce goes: press!
Yes, press! I
feel important!
He keeps on talking
"I tour a lot with Grand Funk Railroad, which have a remarkable success in all the U.S., and I enjoy playing with them a lot and, by the way, this activity represents for me more than half of my earnings too.
We hope that there will be many people here tonight!"
Indeed. We are so many here who believe that the best KISS line up ever from a technical point of view has been the one with you and Eric!
"Thank you!"
So how the work is going with your new album?
"Really well!
I am very happy how the songs are coming out, and especially about all the musicians which played with me, it's an honour and a great satisfaction.
To work again with Gene was amazing, and Nick (Simmons) was so cool, a fantastic voice, similar to his father but more groovy, almost blues."
This is the list of guest stars to date:
Gene Simmons (KISS)
Eric Singer (KISS, Alice Cooper band)
Brent Fitz (Union, ESP)
John Corabi (Motley Crue, Union, ESP)
Jimmy Haslip (Jack Black & session player for KISS)
Jeremy Rubolino (Bruce and assistant engineer)
Nick Tweed Simmons (Hands of God)
Tobias Sammet (Avantasia)
Doug Fieger (The Knack)
Steve Lukather (Toto, Peter Criss 1978).

While talking, he handle me a cardboard like a business card with the promo photo of BK3 that recently appeared on his site, www.kulick.net,  and that you may find also here.
Hey nice!
"Do you like it?, I did it on purpose to promote the album, what do you think?"
Cool, it's nice also the idea to put on the back the photo that shows the neck of a guitar with three fingers on to form a power chord

"They should recall the "3" of the title BK3.
Actually the title is not 100% final, but I thought that the initials BK I use for years to sign and the number 3 that represent my third solo work was as effective as a title.
Also I didn't want to come out with names or phrases too fancy or bizarre."
Reading your blog I have listed almost 17 titles, will they wind up as songs on BK3?
"Let me see!" (I show him my list)
"No! Give me that paper"
(he takes the pen I was writing with and starts to tick and write notes on the list)
"I started working on this project almost two years ago and then, because of my many commitments, I had to put on hold the work, so which were song ideas for new tunes remained only titles while other titles have been added, becoming tunes I actually recorded.
Currently these are the songs just released:"
01. I
will survive
02. And I know

03. No friend of mine (John Corabi on vocals)
04. Life
05. It's never enough (Doug Fieger on vocals)
06. Is not gonna die (co-written with Gene Simmons on vocals)
07. Hand of the King (Co-written with Nick Tweed Simmons on vocals)
08. Instrumental (with Steve Lukather)
09. I am the animal (Tobias Sammet on vocals, Eric Singer on drums)

"The music is a mix of the Union sound, Stone temple pilot and KISS.
And for what concern KISS kind of production it reminds the one we had on the albums Revenge and COS."

WOW, cool, Revenge and C.O.S. are among the KISS albums I like the most!
"Well also for me Revenge is one of the best KISS albums."
Oh yes and what about C.O.S.? You played so great on it.
"Yes, but not everybody liked it! (He laughs)
And among the many there is a certain Paul
(Stanley)! Don't ever talk to him about that record!
Would you like to listen to some of the songs?"

I hide badly my enthusiasm and I go: Wow, yeah!
"OK I go to my room and I bring you my iPod ...."
2 minutes later he's back and he handles me his MP3 player and his professional headphones… I listen to:
Is not gonna die (co-written with Gene Simmons, with Brent Fitz on drums)
Hand of the King (Co-written with Nick Tweed Simmons)
Instrumental (the title has not yet been defined, with Steve Lukather)
I am the animal (Tobias Sammet on vocals and Eric Singer on drums)
And I know (BK on vocals)

Is not gonna die
The song starts, powerful guitar riff and the hoarse voice of Gene fill my ears .... chills, amazing!
The production is great, the guitar parts are woven deeply and Gene pulls out all its wickedness and his romance  ... cool, cool, cool!
At the end there is an instrumental coda that recalls exotic rhythms with echoes in the background of Gene grazing.
Hand of the king
Stunning! Nick has the same stamp of his father voice, but lower, warmer, the song has amazing vibe, and the guitars.... Great Bruce!
Instrumental
A battle of guitars which run in and out

Before I start listen to it, Bruce explain me he is on the right channel and Steve (or Luke as his friends call him) predominantly on the left one.
Wonderful, I would name it Ocean ... this is the image that came to mind while listening to it with closed eyes.

I am the animal
Tobias's voice is unmistakable and the piece is a great piece of epic rock, with Eric drumming fiercely thundering.
Bruce tells me that it was Eric to introduce him Tobias, he did not know him and he did not know what to expect from him
"When he started singing I was open mouth, very cool, what a power."
And you may feel it all on the song!
And I know
Bruce, Bruce, Bruce!
It could be called a classic BK tune, but with something more, the voice!
Bruce has made a tremendous step forward.
"I worked hard, I am glad you like it, honestly it is really a great improvement for my voice."
Bruce, I'm looking forward to the release date, have you an idea when it will be ready and how you will distribute it?
"I am glad you like it, I am very happy too.
I think that might be ready by April and then could be distributed by middle of the year, but do not want to rush things.
At the same time I do not want to tell you a date right now, when I'll be sure I'll let you know.
I do not want to create false expectations or keep on repeating that the album is almost done and then never releasing it...
I'm very proud of what I've done 'till now and I want to do things right.
Also Gene told me that it is a very high level product and certainly many labels could be interested.
I have some contacts, but you know which is the record industry situation and especially record labels, today they exist tomorrow they are gone out of business.
I am very tempted to go out with an EP meanwhile, to let everybody know what I'm doing and that the product is there, not just words on a blog."
I'm now taken by the conversation, it seems to me to be with a friend chatting and I go, well, I would no to do the EP thing; perhaps it would be enough to put a few samples on the net.
The songs are stunning; they deserve to be all at once on an album!
"Let's see, I'm still thinking about the cover and the packaging.
I am glad what I did for the previous CD, but I want to do something different this time, at the same quality level of the music and at the same time I do not want to overdo it, for example with references to my past career in KISS.
It would be easy to use even the same font of Destroyer or create links to past KISS album covers, I want to do something classy, but it should be mine, it should be BK.
I'll keep you informed on developments.
You all can leave your e-mails here
www.kulick.net/bk3 , and when I'll be back home I'll begin to update you."
Thanks Bruce, congratulations again!
"Thank you.
Let me know when you will edit the interview.
Now I must go to get ready for the show.
See you at sound check."
See you!

PODKISST #14
(from podkisst.com)
We’ve long wanted to do a show about the KISStoric Australian tours that have delighted fans down under since 1980. Then we learned of the wildfires that have taken a tragic toll on lives and land. This was the catalyst for us to pay homage to the enduring bond between KISS and Australia.

As the bushfires continued, we saw a spirit of brotherhood come shining through. In 1998, Paul sang about “strength in numbers.” Maybe he was singing about the KISS Army, our international collective that knows no borders.

Upon learning that the PodKISSt was doing a show about the wildfires, the online KISS Army demonstrated remarkable solidarity by sending messages of hope. LoveGun07 wrote: “It’s been wonderful getting to know our Australian KISS Army brothers and sisters, and I wish them all safety.” Px74 said: “My deepest sympathies to all families and friends affected by the terrible bushfires in Victoria.”

GENE AND ERIC ON THE NEW ALBUM

Deucenews is reporting, that being asked about the new album and if he will be singing lead, Eric Singer said:
"I don't know! Many fans started asking me about the new KISS album, when it will be released, but I can't tell you anything about, I did not even enter the studio with them so far..."

Deucenews is also reporting, that according to the Argentinan website Pagina 12 , who did an intewrview with Gene, he said:
"We are making a new album produced by Paul, because I do not have the patience to get into a studio and stay there for six months. Who better than Paul for that? The idea is to make the record quickly, like we did at the time of Destroyer, Rock And Roll Over and Love Gun. But we must be prepared, so we are now working on songs when we have time. Maybe in March we will go in a studio and record two or three songs. The idea is to work well, little by little, we can not spend too much time in the studio, it has to be fast."

SCOTT VAN ZEN: "GENE IS A GENIUS"

(from rockpages.gr)
We continue our KISS special feature with the 22nd interview of a KISS-related figure. This week, Scott Van Zen, composer and KISS’ collaborator during the Revenge and Carnival of Souls era remembers that time-period. Here’s an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr:"Carnival Of Souls" featured no less than 3 co-written songs by you and Gene. This record is one of my all time favourite KISS albums from the non-make-up era. Would you like to tell us a few things about that collaboration and why not share with us some details about each one of the three songs?

Scott Van Zen: Gene and I had written about 20 - 25 songs after the success of Revenge. At that point we were getting together a lot and just churning out ideas. Gene and Paul chose the songs for the CD. Hate is my favourite groove of all of them.

FIRST ALBUM PROMO POSTER

For each album promotional posters were printed by the record company to promote the new album. The poster usually followed the design of the album cover. The promotional poster for the first album was something special as it was a great unusual shot from Kiss 1973 in smoke, Peter with a knife in his hand and with an old design of his make-up. It came folded just to fit into an album. It looks amazing! It usually sells for a good amount of money and it is up on eBay at the moment.

KISS PINBALL MACHINE

(from Christian)
As a fan of pinball machines I can recommand you this website in case you were not yet aware of it:
http://www.ipsnd.net/View.aspx?id=1386
You can register your pinball machine on this site with the serial number of your Kiss pinball machine, so it gives us a bit of an idea how many of them still exist.

The Kiss pinball machine has the serial number stamped into the wood cabinet directly below the right flipper button and on the left hand side of the headpiece. The numbers start with EKI for 'Electronic KISS' and then following a number between 1001 and 18000.
17000 KISS pinball machines were made. The numbers started with EKI 1001.

ESP PRAGUE CONCERT REVIEW

(from Pavel Hromada)
There were about 700 people at the show. The atmsosphere in Retro Music Hall was marvelous and the band enjoyed playing. A lot of LCD monitors brought every detail to everyone.
After the show there was a signing session. Although only 1 item per person was allowed, the queue took an hour. During the show no pictures and video allowed.
Some fans could not get there because motorway from Brno to Prague was covered with snow and the traffic jam lasted more than three hours.

KISS frontman Paul Stanley and his wife Erin welcomed an 8 lb. baby girl on Jan. 28, the rocker's rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"The KISS Army has a new princess and her name is Sarah Brianna," says Stanley, 57. "Erin and I feel truly blessed with the addition of this Star Child into our lives."
Sarah is the second child for the couple, who married in 2005.
The singer/guitarist and his wife, an attorney, live in Beverly Hills with their son Colin Michael, 2, and Stanley's son Evan Shane, 14, from his previous marriage.
In addition to caring for Sarah, Stanley has other big projects on the horizon: The accomplished painter will tour America with KISS this summer to celebrate the band's 35-year anniversary.

The Gene/Peter single is on eBay at the moment. Collectors know this promo single is almost impossible to get. And it reflects in the starting price...

REMEMBERING MARK ST. JOHN

(from www.deucenews.jimdo.com)
Hi everybody
Today is the birthday of Mark St. John.
I wanted to remember him, so thanks to his sister Kathleen I have the pleasure and the honour to publish this exclusive interview with her, talking about his late brother Mark.

Hi Kathleen, thank you again to have accepted my request.
Reading some of the few past interviews I realised how Mark was really modest about his success and really into the importance of human relationship.
"So fortunately in my life I had people around me who supported me and pushed me and kept me going because if I hadn't had that support I probably wouldn't be doing this. They pushed me to a point where it became a business. And that way there was some long term and short term goals involved, like the whole family type of thing." (Strike 46)
How do you recollect his efforts at those times to become a number 1?
Mark was a perfectionist. He studied all types of music. Beethoven, Mozart, different cultures, ect. He practiced all the time. 24/7 He breathed, lived and probably dreamed about guitar.

Mark was really a talented musicians, he might play any kind of strings instruments from violin to ukulele, not talking about any sort of guitars or basses.

I guess you listened him playing all this sort of things, which was according to your personal tastes the instruments that better fitted his style and his being?

Mark was truly versatile in playing String Instruments. Everything he played he played with perfection. My favourite would be the Gibson SG Doubleneck guitar. (before KISS) and in his last years the Sitar and the Acoustic.

Mark joined KISS by June 1984 and he was out of the band by end of November.
On December 8, 1984 he was officially replaced by Bruce Kulick.
Mark was a very nice guy and very honest and simple.
History tells us Paul Stanley did not like his work on the Animalize demos, but he was also the one who brought Mark in.
What do you think caused the will to put him out of the band?

Mark was a progressive player.  I believe Paul Stanley was impressed by his talent when he hired him but when they actually began to play Marks Chops were a bit too much for Paul.

Soon after Mark departed from KISS he formed White Tiger which did really well being an independent release, but unfortunately they did not get the right credit soon after.
He also joined another ex KISS member in the late '90, Peter Criss.
They played only once together live if I remember well.
What can you tell us about this period in Mark life?

Mark and Peter got along great.  Peter Criss was a sweet heart.  He would come to our house and rehearse and on occasion stay for dinner. It was a time of creativity and exploration.  Without the pressure and limitations from KISS.

Have you or some member of your family the demos Mark recorded and have you ever took into consideration to get them published?

My Brother Michael is the keeper of those.  I'm not sure what will happen with them. There are some Michael played bass on.  If something does develop it would be amazing.  His style was his own. A truly gifted player.
If you get a chance to listen to his last instrumental CD called the "Magic Bullet Theory" its mind blowing.  He played all the string instruments on the CD.

Kathleen, really really thank you to have been so kind with me over this chat.
One last question, how you would like the KISS fans remember your brother Mark?

As a great Guitar Player that loved to play for his Fans with all his heart and soul. Music was his life till the very end.  (He died while he was repairing a guitar for a local musician)  We miss him terribly but would like to believe that he's up there Rockin with all the great musicians and having one hell of a time.
RIP Mark Leslie Norton (St.John)

HALIFAX IS GONNA ROCK'N ROLL ALL NITE

(from thecronicleherald.ca)
’70s rockers Kiss bringing their leather, platform shoes, pyrotechnics to Commons

The Cat is finally out of the bag, along with the Demon, the Star-child and the Spaceman: Kiss is coming back to Halifax.

Concert promoter Harold MacKay announced at a media conference on Tuesday morning that the veteran makeup-and-leather-clad classic rock act will headline Halifax Rocks 2009 on the Halifax Commons on Saturday, July 18, with a limit of 40,000 tickets going on sale this Friday.

"There’s a lot that’s been written and said about the types of music that Halifax wants to see, and what we keep hearing is it wants good ol’ rock ’n’ roll," said MacKay, who has been trying for two years to persuade Kiss to bring its pyrotechnics-filled spectacle to the Maritimes for the first time since the mid-’70s.

MacKay’s company Power Promotional Events produced last year’s Country Rocks 2008 show with Keith Urban, which drew about 25,000 people, and a series of country concerts on Moncton’s Magnetic Hill.

Members of the Kiss Army have been crossing their fingers since November, when the band’s fire-breathing bassist Gene Simmons leaked the news that the band would be playing a series of Canadian dates this summer and named Halifax as one of the stops. Over the past few weeks, newspaper ads featuring the distinctive Kiss kabuki-style makeup designs have been directing the curious to a Halifax Rocks 2009 website.

On Monday, the website kissonline.com revealed the event was a go as well as the Friday sale date.

The show will feature the current Kiss lineup of band founders Simmons and Paul Stanley, with drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Tommy Thayer, plus four other major rock acts whose names will be released in the coming weeks.

"Obviously these will be rock ’n’ roll bands; there won’t be any rap acts on the bill," said MacKay.

"Actually, Gene Simmons has made it very clear in the contract that they must approve all of the bands that play for us. [read the rest]

MAYBE JUST A LITTLE BIT OVERPRICED...

Kiss merchandise semms to sell like crazy these days. No sign of financial crises. Some magazines sell for 100 Dollars or a poster for 300 Dollars, that seems to be quite common. You can find some recently ended interesting Kiss auctions just above the news. But some people take it maybe just a little bit too far. They think they can get rich by selling some Reunion Action figures. Peter is a real bargain compared to the others, 40 Dollars cheaper! Take a look at the prices...

NEVER BEFORE SEEN KISS FOOTAGE ONLINE TO PROMOTE AUCTIONS!

Several never-before-available privately owned clips of KISS from the 1970s and 80s have been made available online to promote a series of vintage KISS memorabilia auctions on eBay. This marks the first time that retro footage of any band has been released specifically for such a purpose.

The footage, which ranges from the band’s first tour in 1974 - through their colorful period in the 1980s includes everything from Gene without makeup in 1980, to the infamous Paul Stanley “bandit makeup” film, outtakes from the Cadillac, Michigan and KISS Meets The Phantom concerts, to what appears to be an unreleased pro-shot from the Asylum Tour.

Additional clips will be made available each week as more auctions are listed.

The eBay auctions can be viewed here.

"BLACK DIAMOND" BOOK RE-RELEASED

"Black Diamond", an unofficial biography released about 10 years ago, has been updated and has now been re-released.

Description:

Meet the band whose mythology precedes them...'Kiss' has been around for over 35 years in one form or another. From street-gang rock n' roll sadists, to swashbuckling superheroes; from kiddie show monsters to serious musicians; and, from glam rock to heavy metal and back again. Love them or hate them, everyone remembers 'Kiss'. But what about the truths behind the legends that have grown up around the band over the years? This book peels back the myths and stories for fans, non-fans and the curious alike. Eight years in the making, the first edition of "Black Diamond" took the book industry by surprise. Here was the real and complete history of the band from before it was even called 'Kiss', to the triumphant return of the original line-up, to the concert stage in 1996. Ten years later 'Kiss' is still in the news. In this fully updated "10th Anniversary Edition" Dale Sherman takes a look at the changing world of rock music from the early 1970's to the present day and what
