BRUCE KULICK ON NEW AVANTASIA ALBUM
(from bravewords.com)
He has played for MEAT LOAF during the Bat Out Of Hell tour, he has been responsible for the lead guitars on KISS classics such as 'Crazy, Crazy Nights' and 'God Gave Rock 'N' Roll To You'. And now he will upgrade the value of Tobias Sammet's new AVANTASIA epic with his remarkable lead guitar sound: legendary KISS axeman Bruce Kulick.

Tobias says about the collaboration: "I've met Bruce in 2008 in Los Angeles. KISS drummer Eric Singer (who has played drums for Tobias' Avantasia project as well) had played him our Avantasia album The Scarecrow and Bruce must have liked my voice as far as I know. So eventually he asked me to sing a song on his solo album BK3 which is gonna come out in February 2010. I liked the idea, I liked the track, I liked Bruce and so of course I did it. Bruce has always been one of my favorite guitar players, he is one of the classic '80s shredders who got a unique tone and a terrific feeling. His playing is very tasteful. Now, I was looking for an additional lead guitar player for Avantasia to add a new color to some songs and it stood to reason to ask someone who had just become a member of my extended family, so I went for him, and I am happy he liked the idea and immediately agreed. Bruce is a super cool guy, he sacrificed Christmas Eve to start the recording sessions for me in Los Angeles. That says a lot about his work ethic. He is a real pro and a class act! Check out his website Kulick.net."

On April 3rd, The Wicked Symphony and Angel Of Babylon will be released as a double CD in a deluxe box set. This sequel of Avantasia's 2008 chart breaker album The Scarecrow will feature the following guest stars: Klaus Meine (SCORPIONS), Ripper Owens (HAIL!, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH), Michael Kiske (ex-HELLOWEEN), Jorn Lande (MASTERPLAN), Andre Matos (ANGRA, SHAMAN), Bob Catley (MAGNUM), Russell Allen (SYMPHONY X), Eric Singer (KISS), Felix Bohnke (EDGUY), Jens Johansson (STRATOVARIUS), Alex Holzwarth (RHAPSODY), Felix Bohnke (Edguy), Ralf Zdiarstek (AMITAF) and producer Sascha Paeth (ex-HEAVEN'S GATE),

More will be confirmed at Tobiassammet.com as soon as possible.

"ALIVE/35" CD BOX SET
(from Jamie Taylor)
Here is some info on the new Kiss Alive 35 Box Set:
The build quality is superb, the box itself is awesome, just like a mini flight case, heavy and solid, comes with 2 metal logos on it, the Alive 35 logo on the top, Kiss logo on front side, both are screwed in making it look superb.

Then the goodies inside: firstly they come with certificate of authenticity, these are ltd to 200 cases worldwide. Mine being 3/200 which im chuffed about.
Then 46 shows, all recorded from the latest North American tour. All come with the setlist inserted into the cd, which helps unlike the previous instant live CDs they sold. Also 4 leather USB wristbands. These are empty, but you can put what you want on them pics, music whatever..
Then under the lid it has been personally signed by Gene, Paul, Tommy and Eric.

This is one of the best Kiss collectables out there. I know the price is steep £799, but its worth every Penny, with it being ltd to 200 as well makes it a real Kiss gem.
I thought the Japanese DVD Kissology box was awesome, but for me this is just as good if not better...

REVIEW: BRUCE KULICK'S NEW "BK3" SOLO ALBUM

(from woodytone.com)

Here’s a tip for web-minded musicians: Do a blog about your recording process. A good one. Detailed, daily, with lots of photos.
That’s what Bruce Kulick did for the recording of his BK3 CD, and if you’re at all a gear head – and what musician isn’t – after reading Bruce’s blog you’ll want to heard the CD because you want to hear what he talks about doing.

Bruce is a self-confessed gear-a-holic, and as you can see from his blog he used an impressive and pretty cool string of guitars on BK3, including: several Les Pauls, notably his ‘53 (his #1 guitar); a ‘79 Ibanez PS-10 (signature Paul Stanley model – I had one!); a Telecaster; a couple of PRSs; several ESPs including his signature ESP; an ’80s BC Rich koa Mockingbird (sweet!); and even more.

NEW ACE FREHLEY DVD "BEHIND THE PLAYER" DVDAceFrehley.jpg (12424 Byte)
(from Blabbermouth)

IMV, a Los Angeles-based producer of interactive music content and video game systems, has set a January 19, 2010 release date for original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley's "Behind the Player" DVD.

In his IMV "Behind the Player" DVD, Frehley gives an intimate behind-the scenes look at his life as a professional musician, including rare video footage. Frehley then gives in-depth lessons for how to play "Shock Me" and "Cold Gin" and jams the tracks with special guest musicians, including Matt Sorum (GUNS N' ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER), John 5 (ROB ZOMBIE, MARILYN MANSON), Chris Wyse (JANE'S ADDICTION), Tommy Clufetos (TED NUGENT, ALICE COOPER, ROB ZOMBIE) and George Lynch (DOKKEN, LYNCH MOB).

"Video Tab" shows exactly how Frehley plays the two tracks. The video-game-style animated tablature is similar to Guitar Hero, but shows how to play the tracks for real.

SPACEMAN SPEAKS - TOMMY THAYER INTERVIEW WITH THE SAULT STAR
(from The Sault Star)

To some, Ron Wood is still the spankin' new Stone -- and he officially joined ranks with Mick, Keith and boys in 1976.

Tommy Thayer hasn't strutted his stuff as a member of Kiss for nearly as long, but he concedes to feeling some kinship with the famed British musician when it comes to being dubbed new kid on the block.

"If Ronnie Wood is the new Stone after 35 years, I'm definitely the new guy in Kiss," says Thayer, who officially took over lead guitar duties when original axeman Ace Frehley finally departed for good in 2002.

"But my place in the band has become more and more fortified as time goes on, and that's great. Good things take time and this continues to build and grow for Kiss and for me personally, too."

KISS SHOWS BEER CAN BE SOLD AT WEB CONCERTS, TOO
(from adage.com)

CHICAGO (Adage.com) -- So it turns out giving a concert away online is a pretty good way to sell beer and video games.

On Nov. 25, Kiss partnered with live streaming video platform Ustream for an online broadcast of the bombastic and pyrotechnic closing concert for its "35 Alive" tour at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

The broadcast drew more than 2 million views -- Ustream's feed was viewed on its own site as well through social-media hubs such as Facebook -- and it generated enough buzz to rate as a trending topic on Twitter during the Thanksgiving eve performance. The 1.1 million unique visitors, while not rocking all night, stuck around a while: The average viewing time during the broadcast was 43 minutes.

CATOOSA — As an oversized tour bus rolled to a halt in front of the grand front foyer of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa, fans rolled outside, lining up to welcome the band.

Iconic rock act KISS greeted fans on Wednesday to sign memorabilia for the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, a day after a near full-house concert at Tulsa’s BOK Center.

Hundreds upon hundreds of fans raised digital cameras — and screams — in unison as the foursome marched in wearing full makeup. Their inches-tall platform boots raised them to superstar status as they peered over their fans.

INTERVIEW WITH BRUCE KULICK
(from sleazeroxx.com)

Bruce Kulick has been very productive since his departure from KISS in 1996. He's recorded three solo albums, released two studio albums and a live record with Union, has made countless guest appearances and has been a member of classic rock act Grand Funk Railroad, touring extensively with them during the past nine years. Recently I had a chance to talk to Bruce about his upcoming solo album BK3 which will be issued on February 2, 2010. I hope you enjoy the interview as much I as I enjoyed talking to Bruce - he's a class act and a good interview.

Sleaze Roxx:
How long in the making was the new album BK3? Where these songs lying around for sometime or is this all new stuff?

Bruce Kulick:
Well it's all new stuff, there is some stuff on there that dates back as a late as the end of 2003.On Audio Dog that was stuff that I hoped KISS would do but they didn't. So that was stuff that had been sitting around. The reason BK3 took a little bit of time to record and release was that I had other commitments, obviously the touring with Grand Funk Railroad. The material on the record was basically written within the past five years.

INTERVIEW WITH LARRY HARRIS (FROM CASABLANCA RECORDS)
(from avclub.com)

Larry Harris broke into the record business in 1971 when his cousin, Buddah Records bigwig Neil Bogart, gave him a shot at local radio promotion—Harris became Bogart’s right-hand man. He moved with Bogart from New York to Los Angeles in 1973 to co-found the legendary Casablanca Records, which later expanded to include a movie company that produced The Deep, Midnight Express, and Thank God It’s Friday, the lattermost essentially a 90-minute ad for the record label. Casablanca at its height hardly needed the exposure: Its signings included Kiss, Parliament, Donna Summer, Cher, and The Village People, as well as the early comedy records of Robin Williams. Casablanca was also notoriously profligate, spending lavishly and doing whatever it took to appear luxuriantly successful—something that was seldom the case on paper. The company typified late-’70s excess: drugs, especially cocaine and Quaaludes, proliferated. Employees were having sex on desktops (sometimes with help from the musicians), when Bogart wasn’t setting fire to them. And until co-owner and distributor PolyGram stepped in to put the overspending to a halt, free-flowing finances were the order of the day.

All this is detailed in no-holds-barred fashion in Harris’ new memoir, And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records, co-written with Curt Gooch and Jeff Suhs. The most dirt-filled music book since Mötley Crüe’s The Dirt, And Party Every Day is always entertaining and frequently jaw-dropping, from Harris’ description of acting as runner for an enormous amount of cocaine for Curtis Mayfield and several female hotel guests during the Buddah days to tales of calling his own positions on the Billboard charts. The A.V. Club spoke with Harris over lunch at a deli in midtown Manhattan about Gene Simmons’ business acumen, George Clinton’s drug habits, wet T-shirt contests, and much, much more.

The A.V. Club: Leaving aside the obvious question of your age, if we were conducting this interview in 1978, how would it be different?

Larry Harris: Well, Casablanca would be riding the wave, especially in 1978. Disco was king. Kiss was still huge—they’re pretty big now, but not huge like they were. And I’d probably be slurring on Quaaludes.

KISS PRESENTS WILSON MIDDLE SCHOOL WITH GIFT OF MUSIC
(from newson6.com)

TULSA, OK -- Legendary rock band KISS visited Tulsa's Wilson Middle School on Wednesday to shoot a segment of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

"I can't believe what all they have planned," said Caleb Starr, principal at Wilson. "This is going to be an amazing experience for the kids and the adults."

Starr said producers from Extreme Makeover approached him with an offer of free musical instruments from Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation as part of an upcoming edition of the show.

"They're rebuilding the home of a music teacher and his wife," said Starr, "and the teacher wanted to give musical instruments to a school in need. They asked if we would be interested, and we jumped on the opportunity."

PHIL ROBERTS
(from rockpages.gr)

We continue our KISS special feature with the 44th interview of a KISS-related figure. This week, Phil Roberts, illustrator of the “Detroit Rock City” Movie Poster. Here’s an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr:
First of all, how did you get the job of designing the poster for the movie? Was it Gene Simmons who came up with this business proposal?

Phil Roberts:
I'm known around Hollywood movie advertising for caricature posters, "Hot Dog, the ski movie" was my big break beating Jack Davis for that job. And so my friend in print/marketing division at New Line Cinema recommended me to Adam Rifkin when he and Gene weren't seeing any photo shoot posters they liked. I also was working as a sketch artist doing all the preliminary layout designing for the posters that were going to be a photographic solve. I was already familiar with the film by doing all the sketches for that stage of developing the advertising. The photo posters just weren't cool and interesting enough, not enough of an edge. Adam always saw this poster as something like "It's a Mad Mad World "(Monty Python) look. Adam and I got together; hit it off right away sharing the same sick humour and jokes. So it was easy to put all his humour to visuals with all the characters in the movie.

BK3 IS KULICK'S CHARM
(from kissfaq.com)
Say the name Bruce Kulick to fans who grew up as fans of KISS in the 1980s and 1990s and the following words are likely to come to mind: talented, professional, consistent, versatile, musical.

Kulick came into KISS in 1984 at a point where all of the above attributes were needed, and then some. During his 12-year tenure in KISS -- from ghost spots on “Animalize” to his heavy stamp on “Carnival Of Souls” -- he was a consistent thread both in the studio and live, while showcasing an attitude conducive to a team environment. Along the way he showcased his six-string prowess and sensibilities across songs such as “Tears Are Falling,” “Reason To Live,” “Forever,” “Unholy,” “God Gave Rock And Roll To You II,” “Hate” and many more. He was also a vital component of fan-favorite tours in support of “Hot In The Shade” and “Revenge” and the KISStorical “Unplugged.”

The past decade has been an interesting one for Kulick, with the closing of Union, forays with former KISS-mate Eric Singer in ESP, his first two solo albums, and joining the classic rock outfit Grand Funk Railroad.

But now Kulick is two months away from releasing his third solo album, “BK3,” a body of work that has been incubating for three years. While beaming with pride for the album, he is also grounded, candid and genuinely excited to talk about the actual music, creative process and guitar technicalities. Kulick expresses a sense of satisfaction with what he has accomplished over his career, but there is also the sense that he was never content with resting on the laurels of his past musical shadow. KissFAQ caught up with him to talk about how he is looking forward to sharing his own brand of “Revenge.”
